My 5 Most Valuable Convention Takeaways for Personal Development

Most established network marketing companies have a big event each year. We just enjoyed ours last month in the hot and humid Orlando, FL at the world’s largest Marriott property. We have it there because thousands of representatives gather for a jampacked event that includes community, celebration, and personal professional development.

I have a ton of notes that will help me improve as a person and build my business.  The goal is to go to the next company convention at a higher rank and to celebrate my success.  I’ll pull from much of the advice we received, but my favorite takeaways include:

1. Everything Big Started Small – This was the very first thing I wrote down but I told myself I’d remember it every time I feel discouraged or exhausted as I build my business this year. Our speaker during this session referenced Job 8:7 – “Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end would increase abundantly.” It should be obvious but 9.9 times out of 10, no one jumps into success overnight. I have to build it up one block at a time.

2. The Solution Is to Make More Money  This was a recurring theme through several training sessions during Convention. As of a survey taken last year, 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Most of us are feeling the effects of inflation. The wages on our main jobs show that we need extra income to cover the living expenses we have. The solution is to make more money. I proudly offer a path for those looking to get ahead. One of my favorite presenters in the company reminds us frequently  that the best way to help others is to find their need and meet it. 

3. This Is Not a Get Rich Quick Scheme – One of the newest millionaires in our company, Rachel L., shared her story. I found her mindset very helpful in how I’ll approach my business going forward. My goal is to openly and clearly explain to others the benefits they can find as a professional network marketer. This is not a pyramid scam or get rich quick scheme. This business is a stay rich forever and more business! This works because we’re not here to sell, our purpose is to help.

4. It’s Time to Get SERIOUS – Orlanda M. is one of my favorite presenters. He has a military background and I’m always impressed with his work ethic. The more I listen, the more I understand it always comes down to mindset. He shared that we each need to identify what is that ‘never again’ that will keep us going? (I will never again face an eviction notice, I will never again have my car repossessed, I will never again fail to repay a friend who loaned me money, I will never again…) He gave us his framework that keeps him focused and encouraged us to adjust as needed to make it our own. Here’s what I’ve decided works for me:

S – Steady and consistent in my efforts to build my business.

E – Engaging with my team and staying attuned to their needs.

R – Relentless enough to reach out to one more person at the end of a day.

I – I am the one who will reach my goals.

O – Overcome challenges and keep moving forward.

U – Unique and authentic in all things I do.

S – Significance because success happens to you, significance happens through you so that you can have an impact on others and help them achieve their goals.

5. The Stories of Others – One purpose of our annual convention is to recognize and celebrate each of our successes over the year. Several award winners through the day had a chance to share their story. It’s so important because though this business is simple, it does not always feel easy. It is fulfilling and inspiring to know that you are not alone in getting rejected or ignored as you reach out to potential business partners and clients. We had stories from educators, nurses, single parents, those surviving illnesses, corporate professionals, veterans, and more. I’ll leave you with this quote from my friend Jane who has replaced her income as a teacher in a few short years. For many of us, this sums up what we do as professional network marketers and how we help others because again, the solution is more money: “I don’t know any life insurance plan out there for $19.95 a month that can give my family a 6-figure return every year.”
