No Spring Break Plans? Let’s Hit the Road!

March 05, 20253 min read

There are countless reasons to travel — to relax, seek adventure, dive into history, or meet new people. Most trips check more than one of these boxes! With the weather warming up, it’s the perfect time to get outside and embrace spontaneous travel. If you’re craving a spring break escape, whether with family, a travel buddy, or solo, a last-minute road trip is one of the easiest ways to satisfy your wanderlust.

You can hit the road to explore a neighboring city, cross state lines, or journey across the country. Maybe you want to see a famous monument, taste a regional dish, or just soak in the scenery. No matter your destination, watching landscapes shift from your car window can melt away the stress that’s built up this year.

Road tripping through the 48 contiguous states — and even into Canada or Mexico — is surprisingly simple. If you plan to cross international borders, just check for travel alerts and safety advisories before you go. To spark your travel inspiration, here are a few of my favorite road trip memories:

Road trips to Memphis, Tijuana, and Tucson

Memphis, TN:

I have to shout out one of my home states first! During the pandemic, a road trip from Louisville, KY, to Memphis, TN, was a much-needed escape. Memphis is rich in American history, music, and food. I recommend visiting the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, immersing yourself in the sounds of legends like B.B. King and Elvis Presley, and tasting everything from BBQ ribs to pulled pork. (Spoiler: Not all BBQ sauce is the same — see if Memphis-style wins your heart!)

Tucson, AZ:

Business trips can double as mini adventures! On a work trip to a wellness resort in Tucson, I rented a car and explored the surrounding desert. Seeing towering Saguaro cacti up close was magical, and I even challenged myself to climb Tumamoc Hill before catching my flight home. Renting a car added freedom and turned a quick business trip into a memorable getaway.

Tijuana, MX:

My sister and I took a fun detour during a San Diego trip, crossing the border into Tijuana and driving up the coast for Pacific ocean views. It was a true day trip, perfect for two women traveling alone. We explored vibrant markets, devoured tacos, and even tried the original Caesar salad — fun fact: it was invented in Mexico!

One major road trip perk? Fewer packing restrictions! Forget cramming toiletries into tiny bottles or stressing over luggage weight. Load up on snacks, bring your full-size lotion, and throw in that extra pair of shoes just because you can. (And yes, peanut butter counts as a liquid on planes — but not in your car!)

Here are my top 5 road trip must-haves to keep things smooth and stress-free:

  1. Keep your gas tank at least half full — better safe than stranded.

  2. A blanket, pillow, and cozy socks & shoes for comfort.

  3. Phone, camera, and all the chargers.

  4. A trash bag to keep the car tidy.

  5. Plenty of snacks and drinks to stay energized. There's just something about road trip snacks that hit different!

I hope these tips inspire you to hit the road and make some unforgettable memories! And if travel lights you up, why not turn your passion into profit?
