When Plans Change: How to Salvage Your Vacation When Things Go Off Track

April 01, 20252 min read

You’ve spent months planning the perfect getaway—flights booked, hotels reserved, activities lined up. But what happens when things don’t go as planned? Sometimes, the worst-case scenario is a full cancellation, though hopefully, that’s not the case. But even partial disruptions can throw a wrench in your dream vacation.

One of my new clients experienced this firsthand when severe storms hit Florida last fall. She had planned a beach vacation for her family, only to find that the storm made it impossible. With flexibility and an open mind, she worked with me to secure a last-minute booking in Gatlinburg instead. It wasn’t the oceanfront escape they had envisioned, but swapping sandy shores for mountain views still allowed them to achieve what mattered most—quality time together, a change of scenery, relaxation in a hot tub, and plenty of fun!

Speaking of unexpected changes, I just returned from my road trip, and while I was fortunate not to experience cancellations, I did have to pivot one of the most exciting parts of my itinerary. The company operating my highly anticipated hot air balloon ride in Albuquerque had to cancel due to dangerously high winds. When we stepped outside the hotel, we were met with a sky completely brown from dust and debris—definitely not the dreamy sunrise flight I had envisioned! While disappointing, I truly appreciated that the tour operator put safety first rather than taking unnecessary risks.

Instead of dwelling on the change, we decided to make the most of our day. We found a fantastic brunch spot and then did something totally unexpected—we went to a movie! While movie theaters aren’t usually a vacation activity for me, I realized I hadn’t been to one in months. It turned out to be incredibly relaxing, and to my surprise, ticket prices in Albuquerque were the lowest I’ve seen in a decade! (Seriously, what’s their secret?)

Top 5 Reasons Travelers Have to Change Their Plans:

  1. Weather Disruptions – Storms, high winds, or extreme temperatures can impact flights, outdoor activities, or entire destinations.

  2. Health Issues – Unexpected illness or injury can force a shift in plans.

  3. Transportation Delays or Cancellations – Flight changes, rental car shortages, or train delays can throw off an itinerary.

  4. Accommodation Issues – Overbookings, maintenance problems, or unexpected closures may require a last-minute switch.

  5. Local Events or Restrictions – Unplanned closures, strikes, or local government restrictions may affect planned activities.

We live in a time where adjusting plans is easier than ever. If an amusement park day is rained out, a quick Google search can reveal an indoor museum or art exhibit nearby. The key to enjoying any vacation is adaptability—don’t let a shift in plans ruin your trip! Stay open, embrace the unexpected, and you might just create memories even better than the ones you originally planned.
